Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, otherwise known as the MMORPG is a niche genre that has been dominated by World of Warcraft for over the past seven years. Many games have tried to dethrone WoW as the king of the MMO, and all have failed. Some miserably. I'm looking at you Final Fantasy XIV. I've always thought that one of the main key's to WoW's success is the fact it's based on and sit in a world that was already well developed world, full of history and lore, history and lore the players are fully aware of, because they experienced it for the last ten years in the other Warcraft games that preceeded World of Warcraft. Final fantasy can't really claim this even though they're a long established franchise, but each game, with very few exceptions, is set in a world onto itself, and Star Wars has a huge universe of history and lore, however most of the people who know of this know it because they've seen the movies, and read the extended universe books, and a fanbase of filmgoers and biblophiles, doesn't necessarily mean they're also gamers. Also one must consider gameplay as well, and WoW is fun to play.
I say all of that so I can say this. Their is going to be an Elder Scrolls MMORPG. I feel that the Elder Scrolls, much like Warcraft before it has a world just full of history and lore that players have personally experienced in the five Elder Scrolls games. Skyrim is honestly the best single player RPG I have ever played, and I think with a few simple tweaks the player creation and leveling system could easily be applied to an MMO. However I then read, this. An excerpt from the latest issue of Game Informer listing some of the key feature in the upcoming game, or accurately listing features to not be included. So many key elements established in the previous five Elder Scrolls games are missing that this game seems like it will barely feel like an Elder Scrolls game. However it is still early yet, and possibly the developers will hear the discourse this list has caused and make the changes for the fans.
