Who is John Blake Anyway?

July 30, 2012

Minor Spoilers in today's comic. Well it would be a spoiler if this had any baring on the plot or anything. In the movie there is a character named John Blake, a young Gotham City cop with a knack for figuring things out. He's an entirely new character to the Batman mythos, further cementing that the Nolan movies are their own entity, probably Earth 487-C or some crap like that, but I digress. With out giving too much away John Blake acts much like a partner to Batman, well not a partner, more like a confidant, and really more of a confidant of Bruce Wayne. I know, I know, Bruce Wayne is Batman. Well if you've seen the movie you'd know what I'm talking about. Anywho at the end of the movie Blake has to use his full legal name, which turns out to be Robin John Blake. Whoa is name was Robin the entire time! That's so significant! Oh wait no, no it's not.

I found this completely unneccesary. He's supposed to be a new character, so why name him Robin? He's not Batman's direct partner, so why name him Robin? He's not a supposed to be a movie counter part to one of the handful of comic canonical Robin's, so why name him Robin? At the end of the movie it is clear that he's not going to be Robin, so why name him Robin? He's a completely new type of Character to the Batman mythos that transends the role of Robin. SO WHY NAME HIM ROBIN! I know I'm harping on about a small minor detail, but it honestly erked me that they made a point to do something so blantantly unnecessary.
