He's Just a Little Hypocritical.

So it's only been a few days since Modern Warfare 3 came out and already Activision has announced the next Call of Duty game. At this point that's really not that much of a surprise, they only do it every year. Only the space in time between Call of Duty and Call of Duty II is more than a year. This isn't a bad thing necessarily. They have an audience, they know what this audience likes and they give it to them at a steady pace. Some people have critisized this though. It's kind of hard to make a game as big as Call of Duty every year and recapture the same level of success. Eventually the games will grow stale as each new addition looks more and more like the last one.

Recently I've heard a few people compare Assassin's Creed to Call of Duty, in that a new game comes out every year. Now I'm gonna go a little fan boy on this and try to show how these are completely different situations. First of all Assassin's Creed is an on going narrative. Each game in the series happens in the same timeline and are directly connected to all the other games. On the other hand the Call of Duty games for the most part are completely separate entities and are not connected the the other games at all.

Secondly the fast output rate of Call of Duty games is owed mostly due to the fact that a different studio works on each game. While studios like Treyarch and what was Infinity Ward have made more than one game in the series, no studio has made two consecutive Call of Duty games. While Assassin's Creed on the other hand each game in the main storyline are made primarily by Ubisoft Montreal. Being made by the same studio hightens the feeling that the Assassin's Creed games are one continuous story.

I think Activision's time at the top is coming to an end. They're getting more and more competition from EA with their Brother's in Arms and Battlefield series, not to mention the shadow of Halo 4 looming over the horizon. But who know's maybe I'm completely wrong and Call of Duty will never die. It'll will become the Madden of first person shooters. Same game every year, they only change a few names and tweak the gameplay a little to trick you into thinking you're buying a completely new gaming experience. Then again some people think that has already happened.
